You are my Sunshine

You are my dream
O Spirit of the world
To find your heartbeat in the land
Is my sole desire
To hear your name
Whisper with the creek

Your whole self
Flutters just outside my window
The scales on your wings.
Glitter and fall
with the poise of little angels
They land on my heart
And they nourish it

I'm in love
With the groves in your jaw
And the wrinkles on your brain
The way you tilt your head forward
Spy my face in corner of your eye

The way you tell me little secrets
I was never supposed to have
-Though I'm grateful

I'm in love with time spent with you
The way we condense the sky into our drink
And enjoy its subtle flavors

In our various tongues

It all tastes sweeter

When I'm with you

This little pond reverberates
With the vibrations from our speak
The wake stirs and ripples onward
Like a poem never finished

From the Author

Trinis (That’s Trinidadian people in the local speak) are big on singing to each other. From weddings to funerals, it’s engrained in our culture to sing when the heart overflows. From when I was little and even up to now, my mother would sing to me in tender moments:

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are grey. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you. So please don’t take my sunshine away.”

I’m assuming that she passed those tender moments to me from my grandmother, who also sings this song to her grandkids every chance she gets. I sing this song to my nephews and nieces. I sing it for my wife. I even sing it to my cats when they’re not being total turds.

This is a love poem for tender moments. It’s for the few dear people that enrich my world. It’s for the cool air and colder waters that inspire me. It’s for my beloved partner. It’s for all the good things that are yet to come. These are all part of the “Spirit of the world”, who represents to me the true and compassionate thoughts of the creator. I wish to know that spirit well by the time our book finally closes.

One last thing!

Well. I’ve gone and done it. I’ve made a Patreon page.

You’ll never get a request from me to throw your money at work I gladly put up for free. Regardless; If it is your desire to support my work, this would make my day and directly fund/inform my publishing aspirations.

I’m still workshopping material and immaterial bennies for patrons. Right now, I’ve just got “thankyous” as well as access to parts of my idea-book to the highest-tier of supporters. (Think of my “Stream of Consciousness” post.)

Besides the button you see below and in my “About Me” page, my plan is to never mention Patreon again. You wont find any of my completed works hidden behind a paywall unless it’s in the form of a very affordable published book!

I've been writing poetry since I was little. These poems have always been my means of resolving the world as it is against the world as it should be. Writing has been my great catharsis. I hope that you and I may be able to share in that.
